This chapter is full of issues/questions
- lots about restitution – A lot of it seems thoughtful as a starting point, but archaic by some of todays standards.
- ie. if you kill a theif in the middle of the night it’s okay, but you’re guilty if it’s after sunrise
- The Israelites described in the OT has always seemed to me like the raising of a toddler… with oversimplified rules. I guess God had to start from somewhere in establishing a people.
- What does it mean to be ‘brought before God’ ?
- v16 – seduction of a virgin, laying with her, paying the bride-price for marriage. I wonder where the woman’s voice is in all of this, maybe it’s wrapped up in the seduction part. And if so, is this a case for legit sex-before-marriage that isn’t rape?
- lots of stuff that seems to end in death – female sorcerer, sleeping with an animal, sacrificing to other gods. I wonder if the person ‘executing’ thought this was fair? How do we contextualize any of this today?
- v25 – lending to the poor – we’re not to deal with them as creditors
