Urim and Thummim

by Lon on October 30, 2009

I’ve been doing a bit of research on Urim and Thummim since it appears in the passage for an upcoming talk in Nehemiah.  I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve read through the scriptures over and over… and yet I never had a clear sense of what this “Urim and Thummim” actually are.

Doing some more research, most people don’t either.  How peculiar.

The Scriptures never really give enough of a description and sometimes its described as sacred objects other times as a process for discernment.

There’s similar concepts in other ancient near-eastern religions, but the best consensus i can find so far is that it appears to be two small objects, that each represent a number of polar responses – ie. yes/no, guilt/innocense, or even something subtle like lights and perfection.  They were placed in a pouch that are described as going into a chestplate of some type.  A priest or someone of rank would use it to make important decisions.

So kinda like a magic eight-ball for ancient times.  hrm.
