Virgin Mobile Canada iPhone 4

by Lon on August 9, 2010

For those of you checking in on virgin mobile canada iphone 4 here’s the scoop from my story

- Ordered a 32GB July 30th around 1am after the midnight launch (the website was glitchy with different prices immediately after the launch)
- got a web confirmation number
- Around 8:45am I lined up at a virgin mobile kiosk – Passed by about a thousand people lining up at fairview mall apple store in toronto. I was first at the kiosk when they opened. No phones.
- Virgin dude was nice enough to put my name down, and actually called me when the phone came in an hour later.
- They only had 16gb models – and i suspect all virgin’s only had 16gb phones serving the lower end of the market
- I turned it down – deciding I needed the 32gb.
- Back on the online order front – I called in and they said 2-3 business days, like the web confirmation email said.
- Monday – I call an one virgin rep says the order is ‘stuck’. I call a second time and a virgin rep says there are no iphones, and they’re all on back order.
- Tuesday – I discover the most helpful people in this entire process is the @virginmobilecan twitter account who also runs the hello@virginmobile.ca email. They look into my order and email me a tracking number
- Wednesday – I discover I’ve been tracking someone else’s package or the wrong number was sent – as it’s heading to richmond, BC.
- Virginmobilecan twitter people look into it again and I’m finally sent a post-paid shipping notification on thursday. I’m personally sent another email saying that the previous order was cancelled and they immediately processed this one for me.
- During this whole time however contrary to other reports – they haven’t deducted anything from my credit card yet.
- Monday morning, I’ve received my phone.
- Right now i’m having activation issues as it’s in conflict with my previous pre-paid plan switching over to a post-paid $25 my plan with $30 / 6GB data.
- I’m hoping a number of promotions carry forward as well – as I notice they’ve changed what’s available on the main site.

What you can learn from this? The dude @virginmobilecan is actually using social media well and has the ability to make some things happen relatively quick. I suspect the first batch of people who ordered, a bulk of them, had their orders screwed up – I’ve yet to hear of anyone else get an online order for a virgin iphone on twitter. If you’re wondering where your order is, you’ll need to call in multiple times likely to piece the story together.

Update. Everything got activated within about 5 hours. No official call back, but my phone let me know it was activated. Make sure when you sync with itunes you have it updated with your latest carrier code (a small 10k file)

I also managed to get the activation fee waived, plus 6 months unlimited local calls on top of that! (which supercedes the previous promotion of moving you to the next tier of your myplan for 3 months). Those of you who selected the text bonus option – may want to call in for the ‘unlimited’ promotion to be applied as well right now. Or if your monthly is over $65 you can try and get the 5% supertab applied.

I ordered online on Aug. 2d and did a phone follow-up on the 9th (32G handset, pre-paid going to monthly with 6G too) to be told that the iPhone 4 is backordered and that it should be an extra week. No credit card charge yet either.
